If the key challenge in your business is sales and marketing then you are not alone.

The recent DFK Accountants survey into small to medium businesses made some very predictable findings.

When asked what skills the business owner wanted to develop personally, the number one response was ‘take advantage of sales, marketing and branding to grow my business’.

Similarly, the number one response for the skills they wanted their staff to develop was, you guessed it, ‘marketing skills’. The second highest response was ‘sales skills’.

Some of the challenges facing business owners were:

  • 59% – growing their existing customer base
  • 48% – entering new markets with their current products and services
  • 45% – diversifying their client base

Interestingly, 69% of business owners said they stayed informed through email newsletters, making it the highest response. Despite the common view that no one reads mass emails, in reality, if it is relevant to what they care about, people will read them.

Another finding was that half of business owners reported increasing their marketing through social media, particularly Facebook and LinkedIn.

These results confirm one of the approaches that I take in my support for Mortgage Brokers – sales and marketing systems and training, including done-for-you email and social media marketing.

That’s certainly not all that Mortgage Australia does, but it is an important piece of the puzzle.
